As you probably know, the life of a musician playing independent music is not a lucrative one. So when one hits a snag in life that taps the resources and makes working an outside job impossible, times get really hard. This is where Dan and Letha Melchior find themselves right now. You know Dan as one of the best underground rock & roll songwriters around. He's released records on labels such as In the Red, Hangman, S.S., Siltbreeze, Daggerman and others, and played with his bands the Broke Review and Das Menace, as well as Billy Childish and Holly Golightly. Letha is a member of Tretetam and Das Menace, a former member of Ruby Falls, and contributes to a lot of Dan's record jacket art/design, not to mention Dan's partner.

A few months ago Letha was diagnosed with cancer and since then she's been in a pretty hard fight, requiring some operations and much treatment. She's been unable to work. Dan's role as her caretaker has taken him out of the work force. Letha has basic medical insurance but that really doesn't mean a whole lot in the USA. Debt is piling up. And the state that they live in, North Carolina, doesn't offer much in the way of aid. Dan and Letha need our help.

Independent of Dan and Letha, we are asking people to help them out. The Melchior name has given us a whole lot of great music; now it is time to give a little back. BEST STORY I'VE HEARD IN A WHILE

That’s me and my dad.

My dad wasn’t like the other dads. His idea of fun was drinking beer and jokingly shaking down my friends (then six and seven) for money. Besides teaching me how to DJ he taught me how to bullshit. This was one of his best qualities. One of my fondest memories was him keeping a fire hydrant in his trunk that he would occasionally leave on the side walk when he wanted to save a parking spot. He said he saw it in a movie once.

A lot of people say they don’t give a shit but my dad actually didn’t. In my 8th grade year book he wrote, “You give so much in life so why give a fuck. That’s yours to keep.” Words to live by I guess.

Like most teenagers I got in my fair share of trouble which landed me in jail. Believe it or not at the tender age of 15 that wasn’t the first time being there. Nor my second or third.

My father used to take me to bars at night with him. “Real life experience” is what he used to call it. While he slammed beers at the bar I pumped quarters into the table top Pac-man and drank ginger ale out of shot glasses. My dad was a bit of a hot head and on one of these nights he decided to pick a fight. I’ll never forget that night because it was the first time I’d ever seen my dad hit someone. To this day I can honestly say I’ve never seen someone get hit like that. My dad hit the guy so hard the keys rattled in the guys jacket pocket. That’s pretty fucking hard!

So hard it landed us both in jail. My dad handcuffed at one end of a metal bench and me in my pajamas at the other coloring on the back of release forms waiting for my mom to come pick me up.

I'm pretty bad with movies in general. I don't watch them. I do, but I don't.

I never saw a Terminator movie... Successfully avoided for 26 years.

This past weekend I saw T4. It blew some brain cells. Then the following day I watched T2. Blew some more brain cells.

I was left with two continual thoughts: (1)Who came first, John Connor or Kyle Reese? Ultimate chicken or the egg paradox. I mean they had to send Kyle Reese back to the past for some epic reason... or maybe it was the gamble of arranged union of future and past. Fucking John Connor is insane; (2) John Connor's hair in T2 is hella awesome.

But seriously, John Connor's hair is awesome. Cut straight from the upper ear towards his nostril and always fucking awesome in the way that you want either wind or fingers combing through it.

My inspiration... Sexy, glorious, stubborn hair.

It's all I can think about really. I work in the morning as a makeup artist then go to cosmetology school at night. I'm pretty sure I dream about it 5/7 nights a week.

But it's the true art and sculpture of it that boggles me. Take a foundation and make it into a form. Then let it grow. It's beautiful AND amazing.

A letter to my best friends

When people ask me who my close friends are, I always say you four. I just want to let you know that I'm feeling good. At first, moving back home with my parents was ridiculous. My mom ignored me for four days, I'd mope and yearn, and feel deprived of life.

Lately I've been feeling fucking awesome.

I rearranged my room, put up some band posters. I have a growing collection of boxes and records. I have an area to fucking rage on guitar and make xerox crap with a lil'old xerox machine my mom gave me. My job is less than 5 minutes away. I enjoy the scenery that wraps around this pennsylvania hillside. I have a boyfriend and I love making love to him. I opened a library card and netflix account. I have my budget in order. And I spend all my free money on records. And save my change for the soda machine at work.

My radio show is acquiring a local fan base, outside of my mom and dad. I've been making radio fliers to post around the city and campus. I'm happy when I see someone tore them down. The last one was of bart simpson with a upside down cross on his forehead. I stapled it above the payphone near Wawa and the next morning when I went to buy a wawa sizzler, only the stappled corners where left.

Last weekend, my uncle came over for dinner and him and I talked about Flipper, X, Jackie DeShannon, Meat Puppets, Pretty Things, ... 60s psych. I had no idea he was into it. He had no idea I was into it. All I knew about him was that he cheated on my aunt for years, left her and my cousin, came back for Christmas with a new girlfriend, punched my other uncle in the face, and likes to drink beer and cook BBQ. He's back with my aunt and my cousin is preggo with child. She's my age and is still smoking. Her boyfriend likes to drink and has huge coin slots for nostrils.

Just 58 years old, Willy DeVille passed away last night from pancreatic cancer.

The man was the man.

It's really not hard to understand what made him so great. He had this raw complexity and impeccable satire. Deeply romantic yet so masculine. One of the greatest singers and songwriters. And one of the most interesting New York musicians ever.

He was New York. Idiomatic and original. In fact, soooooo New York that he left and then came back, several times. To top it off he hates LA, which isn't necessarily a 'New York' thing, just generally a good thing.

"I hate L.A. It's the worst. I think they eat their children there. I never saw any kids."

Here's some advice for you youths:

Not that one and two are rules I personally abide by. But three -- pshhh the most / best of all. Now, don't go around being a friend-whore. Just, you know... be cool about it.

The point of this being, my friend Christin Turner has been working closely with the Crocodiles in producing / directing music videos for several songs recently released.

Fader Magazine recently gave a puzzling positive review saying some hilarious shit about the video.

...looks like Crocodiles wrangled up a neighborhood kid with a shitty video camera, had him turn on one of the in-camera effects and then let him go nuts. Seriously, this video can’t have cost more than 20 dollars, which somehow makes it even cooler.

... it cost $50.

With Dum Dum Girls signing to Sub Pop and their recent performance at the Woodsist / Captured Tracks fest over July 4th weekend, much has been discussed over the internet (and beeyyyyyyondddd).

1. DDG's signing to Sub Pop after only a 7" and 12" released.
2. Only 2 performance to date ... um, Woodsist / Captured Tracks Fest & what Mario said!
3. Dee Dee's backing band is like an indie super group (Mike>Blank Dogs; Brandon>Crocodiles; Frankie Rose>Crystal Stilts / and I'll include Vivian Girls too just to drop the name)
4. The tunes rule my domeeeeeeeeeeee.

But there is one topic I'd like to personally mention in addition to the positive reviews circulating about the live performance: Dee Dee's dress.

Dude, fringe?! Not just a lil, but a lot ... and in length! A widow's veil born from the cusp of her arms and falling to her knees. I'm all about this.

I mean, not only was I hypnotized by Dee Dee's goose-bump-giving vocals but also by this visually dominant dress. Only when Dee Dee brushed the fringe over my face did I receive the full effect.

Designed by Raquel Medina-Cleghorn, the dress was named best of show by Nylon Magazine. And, believe me it was!

Raquel said she's been obsessed with fringe for awhile. Makes her happy when she's feeling sad sort of thing. Not only has her work been the showcase for her friends such as Dee Dee -- but also herself.

At this year's Coachella she was the subject of a lot attention from Vogue's Style.com wherein they profiled the top-10 outfits from the music festival. Yes, that picture to the left is her in said outfit. Not only was she the focus and inspiration for many national news sources but also the bible for street-fashion blog, The Sartorialist.

So, props to Raquel -- and may her talents grant her wealth and success. Seriously though, she just moved to NYC and the girl needs a job... Anyone?

In the latest installment of the online music interview series, my buds of the Crocodiles gave an insider interview with mother fucking JOHN NORRIS and an exclusive 4-song set performance at Pianos in NYC.

Straight from the weirdly attractive lips of mother fucking JOHN NORRIS: "Crocodiles has one of the best songs of 2009 -- "I want to Kill" is exciting, hypnotic and pulsating." But the man did his homework, mentioning Brandon and Chuck's previous history of bands and affiliations... even spoke about Mario's label, ART FAG.

Just to note -- I really respect The Crocodiles' attitudes on their increasing popularity and media attention. The Crocodiles consistently talk about their music the way a musician should talk about their music: always grateful, doing what they love, knowledgeable and just having fun. It really shouldn't be anything other than that. Just simply have an objective and do it.

Brandon and Chuck have told me about times where they've been boo'd by neigh-sayers. And you know what? They're pleased with that response and definitely not afraid of confrontation, actually makes them smile to think they affect people that much.

Hence, I'm wholly pleased their album is titled "Summer of Hate"; it really balances out their super posi attitudes. Really gives me that nice, complete feeling. Now let me find a mirror and stare deep into the abyss of my soullllllll.

The following info provided by Timpunk.

The Sleeve
The sleeve is just plain white card. On the front, the title has been applied with a rubber ink stamp. Below this are the bands signatures, signed with pink felt pen. At the very bottom right-hand corner (again in pink felt pen) is the individual number (0846 on my copy). On the rear of the sleeve is the address to contact the band (handwritten in blue biro) and a very small sticker saying 'Distributed by IDS'.

The Vinyl
The two vinyl discs have completley blank white labels. The only way to check which is which is to check the scratched markings on the run-off grooves. The run-off grooves also include obsure messages made during cutting. They read as follows:
Side A : I got a picture of Elvis Costello by reading the middle of a record.
Side B: Ok Rich we have got an album.
Side C: Boss big brain rollover.
Side D: IE - Dollys Take over.

The Insert
The album contains an insert which is a piece of 'pink A4 size paper'. This features the chronological track listings & some cartoon drawings of 'Hester', 'Debsey' and 'Rachel'. It also has a drawing of 'Captain Sensible' (The Damned) wearing a long dress asking "can I join in?". Poigiantly, the last thing its says on the insert is "And this is only the begining ". They did in fact split within the year.

Nonesuch Records, famous for sending a copper phonograph record into space in 1977, have recently reissued all Explorer Series releases onto CD format. From the mid 60s to early 80s, Explorer Series producer, David Lewiston would travel directly into the field and record the respective sounds of Asia, the Middle East, and the Latin America. "It's only recently that it's been feasible to make really decent recordings in the field. In the thirties they would have to take record cutting machines out into the fields and very often the equipment would fail. I take two pairs of microphones, 20 hours of recording tape, camera and film. This with a change of clothes amounts to 70 pounds, much better than the previous 200 pounds people had to carry." The North Park Library is sponsoring this listening experience of the national sound and instrument of Zimbabwe. The album focuses on Shona Mbire, a music older than dirt that is primarily used to facilitate spiritual ceremonies. Mbira dzavadzimu (photographed on the cover art above) is the instrument that you'll hear. Rolling Stone is in San Diego this weekend.

We all got together last night at Lucy's (drummer of christmas island) house for a RS photographer to take really not-bad cool-looking photos of what it's like to be in this town that's south of LA and north of TJ. I brought my bb gun. But I don't look fun enough to make a good photo - sorry mom.

I'll be turning 26 soon and I feel so confused and angry. And this discontent is only more so heightened by the timing of its arrival. Why now? Why not 10 years ago when I was supposed to feel insecure and suffocated with conflicting listless fury.

Being 16 (for me) was stupid easy. So simple and honest. I never felt a natural urge for pious rebellion. Not my thing.

Really what was I supposed to be angry about? --- "No, mom I don't want to clean the microwave" --- ???

My life ruled.

Flash forward to now, and my life still rules but I feel so much soul constipation. With age undertaking more shit - rightly so.

Fucking bills. Fucking boys. Fucking money. Fucking lies. Fucking death. Fucking mistakes.

So really, I don't understand why there aren't more fucked up old people out there. Or did they just forget how to feel affected? ... idiots.

Anyway .................... I just watched, "Pump up the Volume" for the first time and it like for real hella totally spoke to me.

A long time ago, in a far off land, I had a sense of purpose. No, wait. Let me rephrase that: 6 months ago, in NYC, I was employed.

[True Story.]

I was a graphic designer for an elite educational cruise company wherein I'd stay late catching up on work. Thus, the IX-V lifestyle began. I was fascinated by my having of said job and becoming this working-woman sort. Wearing pant suits, sweating over rush hour, health benefits, 401que.

In order to get back at them for turning me into a weekend warrior, I began abusing my employee xeroxing privileges. Which inevitably led to "IX-V: For ___": a celebrated zine sent as gifts to transcontinental loved ones on behalf of my office induced back pain and eye-strain.

And today it looks like this project is coming to fruition with the help of publication mogul, design magician and dear deer friend, Mike Ley. Under wraps of MLPROJECT.com, this baby is printed in nice as shit paper. Colored paper.

In spirited coordination with this year's SXSW, an unofficial official CD-R comp will be included with the Zine's production. All in all, the comp is great. Superb. Fucking blowing your mind.

A limited-ass-fuck printed edition of 20**. Count it. T-W-E-N-T-Y. For $10 bucks, you'll receive a very nice book of artistic anti-work images, along with exclusive tracks from my personal favorite bands.

So when I see Wavves and Blankdogs listed under influences, it is strange to me. Just plain strange and too soon. Chill out, let it simmer. Crock pot that shit.

It's as if there is this crazy derelict within knowledge that people are too _?_ to collect on their own. German philosopher Immanuel Kant -- "Although all our knowledge begins with experience, it does not follow that it arises from experience."

Taking into consideration this "a priori" and "a posteriori" distinction: truth that is assumed from reason; truth that is evident by experience. I'm going to state that truly knowing and forming an intimate relation with your music is important. It is strong, not weak, and secure. Forming musical aspirations built on summation of trends is weak, not secure, and distant.

Get all close n shit.

But, buttttttttttt. I can form a weak visceral judgement and motive based on my intrinsic notions. "I like this music, because I like it." I don't have to know or even begin to understand the historical accuracies and importance of a sound that sounds fucking amazing to me. How special is that? Music is such a dick. We make it what we want. And the internet is our means to an end.

This whole idea was brought up in conversation today with ----. It got a little heated, and I was left fucking openended as the yoosh. We were talking about this band from Ontario, Little girls? Yeah, it was over Little Girls. Captured Tracks is releasing something. The band is promoting a contemporary common yet pleasant noise. Some might say they produce sounds just like wahhh and bahhh. To me, well ... it's fuel in the fire. A future fire.

Cool. I mean, picture that shit. Future fire. Does it even look like fire? Hmmmm....

Little Girls is a continuation band. Though, I like it. And I have nothing against bands that say to themselves, "Hey bandself, let's make music that sounds like wahhh and bahhh. Why? Well, just because I like it". You don't need more substantial support other than that. A completely superficial prerogative.

On levels of historical greatness, who knows what and who will be embraced by the dirty hands of father time. If you want to gain ground in your running for such titles either be greater than Jesus or die. Only with death can life be determined. I don't really need to finish this thought. It's kind of stupid.

My friend Mario of Art Fag records hooked me up with some songs of Ye Olde Maids from their upcoming release... I love it and enjoy listening to it more and more and fucking more. Electro pop with vocals. Pretty simple. Pretty effective in my ears.

Another project of Wes Eisold and some other dude (I dunno his name), Ye Olde Maids is my favorite though his most experimental. (Gaining the most of attention of Wes' bands currently is Cold Cave. His most succesful is American Nightmare/Give Up the Ghost.

Given that I'm not as productive lately in writing in this here blog. It takes such inspiration for me to be all, "fuck I want others to know about _____". And so, I feel that way about Ye Olde Maids. The more I hear it, the most I think about its concept... deep thoughts. Wes sings into a vocal transformer so that we hear a young girls voice with subtle sounds of his original voice. Basically comes across as some vocal duet -- to which I originally thought it was until I was corrected by Mario. But don't let the truth ruin the mystic. The 'female' voice is seductive and romantic. With soft tones and strong lyrics the vocals come across as dynamic and contemplative. Reminiscent of ... well, practically all bands listed as influences: raincoats, bags, kleenex, huggy bear, essential logic, young marble giants, pussycat trash, esg, throwing muses, velocity girl, girlschool, tiger trap, shaggs, vivien goldman, slits, would be's, shop assistants, black tambourine. Excellent list, I might add.

But this is where I get into deep conceptual thoughts, man. Ok, after the trickery of vocals in my mind is settled. I started thinking, shit -- this girl is fake. Who is she? Then *click*, perhaps she is a voice within Wes' head. I really don't want to carry on with this notion without knowing for sure what the reasoning behind such a feminine voice. Probably just, because it sounds cool. But to me, I'd like to think Wes created this vocalist as his perfect female figure. One to romanticize and consider intimate. I dunno, just listen and enjoy.

Music and The Internet
Subtitle: "I'm so weirded out by the internet"

There are obvious pros and cons about how the internet affects your music scene. (I write 'your' rather than 'the' because music is, I feel, at the present moment, a personal possession and responsibility of the public, you.) The majority of musicians I encounter are experiencing opportunities not otherwise available in absence of the internet. We, as music apostles, are hearing new music, gaining fans, divulging music education, networking with bands, buying/selling merch... We, as internet fiends, are giving into homogenization, gentrification, pirating, marginal successes, the superficial super-fiscal... Tremendous access of this magnitude is equated by a high sense of anxiety, presenting the new-age and quite fucking nostalgic quandary: How are we to handle the responsibility of the internet? How can we adjust and sustain our careers within the music and art culture as it now primarily exists by way of the world wide web?

These are just a few of the confusions posed with the onset of 'being connected'. I write that and get a sense of repulsion. Derogatory and invading -- It's just sad, dudes. What are we connecting into? Who is accessing that information? Answer: I dunno But there is one allusive illusive mogul profiting from this insecurity. Without standards and protocol the media runs amuck. And duh, they do. Gallivanting across this digital playground, they have access to so much information on mass markets, and however dumb I like to think they are -- they can be just as smart. Yet yet yet yetyettttttt they are just as naive to this whole internet revolution as we the productive counterparts and patronized patrons are. Their human minds are just as blown when trying to grasp The Internet. All in all, The Media must keep up with us and our many network avenues. They have to swindle and sell trust in order to maintain your committed attention. But the pyramidal shape to which the previous standards of news media elated itself to is moot as an informational source. No longer is there a need ... fuck that... no longer is it accurate to instill authority within few major sources.

The internet is in the sweaty hands of the people; and readily malleable and extensive and elusive. With that, there is an increased need for responsibility. Or we're just gonna dick around trying to keep up with what's popular as some sort of validation for quality. Hello, Warhol's 15 minutes of fame is dead. Turnover within popularity is so high that there is no linear progression. What's more important is establishing a community within your online network. Community and subcultures are expanding in definition beyond the boundaries of land locality. I stress community as a solution for sustainability. I have an international crew of fools who I respect and admire and just the same influence me. I predominantly look to their promotions and record labels for upcoming releases and other news because I trust them and find comfort and familiarity in them. More primary source and less secondary hi-brow privileged cyclical media. The DIY ethic isn't an alternative reservation, it is the fucking future, man. Oh, and reviews are lame. Cybering is lame. Drunk ichatting rules. Cats purring in my ear rules.

They called for more structure, then, so we brought in some big hair four-by-fours from the back shed and nailed them into place with railroad spikes. This new city, they said, was going to be just jim-dandy, would make architects stutter, would make Chambers of Commerce burst into flame. We would have our own witch doctors, and strange gods aplenty, and site-specific sins, and hunuhunhunkunukuapuaa in the public fish bowls. We workers listened with out mouths agape. We had never heard anything like it. Not the name of the city, they told us, simply a set of letters selected for the elegance of the script. The little girl dead behind the rosebushes came back to life, and the passionate construction continued.

Get this, yesterday I had really bad cramps at the exact same time of Lux Interior's death. Tragic. The man was only 13.

With the garage sound on the rise (again) in the current independent music scene from coast to coast, there is the ever present mistake of falling into a washed out revivalist drone. Sure the cramps inspired a shit ton of bands to make some cool music. But that was before the internet was born. I'm not exactly sure of what I'm trying to say. But something about Lux's death has triggered a sense of tremendous doubt. One big 'UGHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH' pours out of my mouth in frustration. Making your own sound is becoming more about generating a quick response and a quick revenue. The internet is gentrifying my earphonezzzzzzzzzzzZzzz.

But whatever. Love what you love. Hate what you hate. 'Eh' what you 'eh'. And stop reading pitchfork so much.

So I wrote a preview for Victim Of Time on last night's Three Mile Pilot / Christmas Island / Kill Me Tomorrow / Calico Horse. Go ahead and read it here if you feel the need.

I'm not too fond of it. It's disconnected, unorganized and lacks significant research. To be honest I was filled with anxiety and serious poo's while writing that article. I'm going to go ahead and blame it on my ovulation cycle. Whatever -- it was fun, my life rules and I got to see an amazing show last night that people will be talking about for a very long time.

Christmas Island played an excellent set. I've seen them ... over 10 times? ... and each show is better than the last. They're so damn charming and fun to watch. The three of them are great awesome super nice fun welcoming dope ass cool people, and it shows in their shows, fo'sho. In addition, Brian's starfuck rocker guitar jumpkick is getting better. Hoppppppppefully by SXSW he'll improve his hang time.

Calico Horse started out slow for me. I almost fell asleep in the beginning. Nothing against them, they were great -- I just can't do radiohead-esque melodic music at shows. ButTTTTTT ... they have a nice formula going for sex soundtraxxx, soft sensual voice jams with breaks of heavy guitar rock jams.

Kill Me Tomorrow ruled. First time seeing them live. Excellent stage presence. Excellent jams. Won't be the last time I'll be attending a show.

Three Mile Pilot ... felt so good. Reminded me of a youthcrew hardcore show. Gangs of boys arm in arm singing (belting) out the lyrics all masculine pumping their clenched fists into the air. Smiles were all over the place as everyone was reliving their 20 something years.

Cool. I'll post some pictures from the show after I take a refreshing nap.

DUM DUM GIRLS

I've been meaning to write about the Dum Dum Girls for a while now. They've / she's been around since, I dunno, late summer and already is making internet headway on the myspace top-friends bread crumb trail. As Nate William's solo bedroom project Wavves has gained indie label and internet success, Dum Dum Girls is, in similar start-up fashion, the solo project of one girl with remarkable talent. Dee Dee, a librarian from LA, has the vocal quality and song writing sense to make music magic. I see big big tings for her, especially with Hozac, Black Dogs, Victim of Time (...etc) in support. Not to mention the direction of her sound is packed with extremely catchy charming vocal melodies supported by this slight power twee noise-pop rhythm. Think the haunting aura of black tambourine combined with the angelic allure of Tracy Tracy from the Primitives (but better).

I really hope the dum dum girls continues to produce. With this much of a running star, she's one artist to keep in your peripheral listening vision. I don't want to jump the gun, but this band is on the trail of history making genre influencing shit people. Get on it.

This album sounds so good in my ears today. Monarchie und Alltag is the debut album from Fehlfarben, a German rock band from Düsseldorf. Didn't gain much initial attention, however greatly influenced the Neue Deutsche Welle. Read more about the album here. Enjoy.
