OLDIES PERO GOODIES

Dear friends, this is seriously blowing my mind right now... I was searching for some lovemakn' music (whatever) and stumbled upon this youtube account, reyesm13. So to get on my wavelength, read these three very important reasons why this is ruling my ass right now.

NUMBER UNO, he has one serious collection of rare and classic soul / rnb, or as he puts it, 'cruisin oldies'. I'm not sure if this is a cd collection that he ripped off or compiled the songs himself. But you'll find all sorts of oldies pero goodies that you'll want play as you make love with your sweet honey pumpkin pie ass.

NUMBER DOS, all the videos are backed with images of LOWRIDER ART! Holy mary mother of gawd thy womb Jesus this makes for an amazing music/art collaboration. Pencil drawings typically consisting of chicas, vatos and cars with the occasional gun/rose for good taste, Lowrider art rules. Pure magic. So just .... well, I'm speechless.

NUMBER TRES, this dude's avatar is the fucking RAIDER'S logo. Shit keeps on getting better.

HAPPY NATIONAL EDGE DAY!

I'm not straight edge, never have been, never will. But I have dated plenty men of clarity. So I consider myself an edge aficionado. With that - It's edge day today! I wanna celebrate my 2nd favorite sxe person in the whole entire world, Klint. (yes, that is his leg above) Annnnnnd it just so happens that it is his birthday today. Klint pretty much is the shit. Describing him, funny, arrogant, genius, vsxe comes to mind. Recently How's Your Edge interview him here. In his own words, "My edge is sharp and arrogant, just the way it should be. It also doesn't partake in animal derived activities. I'm not a religious man, but I will admit to the occasional prayer to fucking god. The militant edge is not a joke, you know."

The militant edge is STILL not a joke. I've always held the highest amount of respect for him. Not because of his fucking militant edge, but because he always was, regardless, Klint. Thanks for that, I love you and happy birthday!

If you wanna read more about Klint and his how cute his edge is, read the interview here. Klint plays bass in Reign Supreme. I think they just wrapped up their most recent tour. But since they tour so god damn much that you could probably catch them again soon. And most importantly, Klint's advice column is up and running again.

MEXICAN DAVE // AN INTERVIEW

MEXICAN DAVE

Dave is a dear friend of mine. He helps me out with my spanish and teaches me about Mexican food and alcohol. He like butts and plays in several bands, one of the being a personal Siltbreeze favorite, Ratas del Vaticano - scuzzy, primitive, and sinister punk from Monterrey, Mexico. WMFU posted a couple songs to download here. All in all, I wanted to start framing my network of artists, musicians and regular asses - you know who you are, and your turn will be up. So I hope you enjoy my fabulous interviewing magic because you are witnessing a first here. Next up on the list from category regular assness is my 75 yr old grandma, Nancy Marie Piston Buchman. She's been in the hospital for over a month with a really gross infection in her leg. So I'm sure asking her probing questions, getting some dirt on my Mom and literally wiping her ass will make her feel extremely loved. Her favorite musicians are Neil Diamond and Johnny Cash. So without further hesitation, I bring you Mexican Dave...

WHERE / HOW DID YOU GROW UP AND WHAT WERE YOUR FIRST EXPERIENCES LIKE WITH MUSIC?
I grow up in Guadalupe Nuevo Leon, in a poor neighborhood where i live now,, i just to spend all my afternoond playing soccer with my friends, and watching cartoons and soap operas... i like the music my mother listened to, like cumbias of los tigres dle norte and bronco and mexican sixtis rock(pop bands like rockin devils ,,but when i was like 10, an uncle was taking a shower and listening the unppluged of nirvana, i fell in love with come as you are, and it was my first encounter with "rock" ah-ha!

DID YOU LEARNED ENGLISH FROM AMERICAN MUSIC? WHAT DID YOU LISTEN TO? ... IF I WANTED TO LEARN SPANISH, WHAT WOULD I LISTEN TO?
I learned english listening to music in english, watching stupid american comedy movies, and sometimes i have to practice with my gringos amigos. When i was teenager i used to listen to nirvana, pixies, sonic youth and alternative or indie shit like that, then i discovered punk rock and so on and on. Like everybody else. Here in monterrey a loto f people is bilingual cause we are so closet o texas, so i guess its not so different . If you want to know spanish you should listen Rock Urbano Music, is like rock and roll for "los chavos" or "la banda" that is the the youth or people who dont give a shit about trends, they just listen the same kind of cheesy rock and roll, stuck in the year 87 or something, some bands like, El tri or three souls in my mind, charly montanna are my favorites, and of course you can listen to Ratas del vaticano, and learn from their intelectual lyrics,, lol. ;).

WHAT DO YOU DO FOR A LIVING? WHAT DO YOU 'WANT' TO DO FOR A LIVING?
In my title says I am a translator, and I worked 3 years in that business. Now I work in a callcenter, only to save money,, but I have this net label with other friends. Nenerecords.net …..also I record bands that I like but they only pay for my beer when I have luck., they bands I like always are cheapbastards.

IF YOU COULD LIVE ANYWHERE, WHERE WOULD IT BE?
I would love to live in rio de jaineiro, cause brazilians worship the ass,, so do I.

HAVE YOU EVER BEEN TO TJ?
Yeah,, totally RAD,, haha but its like any street in monterrey, full of bars and hookers, nothing new to me.. I been in Tijuana a whole day with my friend Joaquin (ratasdelvaticano) drinkin since morning and crossing the border all drunk to see the spits, but we were too drunk to care about it, so we missed them, and other day we were hangin around in vynil stores and saying hi to hooker.s I couldnt see the donkey show anyways.

DO YOU FIND YOURSELF WANTING TO SOUND MORE MEXICAN OR AMERICAN WITH YOUR MUSIC?
I don't want to sound neither Mexican or American, I just wanna ROCK!!!! Like the good old bands,, OASIS, NICKELBACK, PINKFLOYD, you know,, GOODSTUFF!!

WHAT BANDS WOULD YOU WANT TO TOUR WITH AND WHERE?
I would like to tour with Livefastdie, the Misfats and Tenacious D and obviously the Spits.

WHAT PROJECTS ARE YOU WORKING ON?
I have a new proyect called BAsura Digital, and another called Mocosos, you know is punk for the people who don't want to pay more than 2 dollars for a caguama.,,,, Maybe someday we gonna release a vynil on nene records, only for the third world,,

WHAT BANDS INSPIRED YOU / WHAT BANDS DO YOU HATE?
The bands that inspired me are Three Souls In My Mind, the Kids, Sindrome del Punk,, they my best influences. and shit like that… I don't hate anyone or anything,, hate is for losers, I only want to die people in garage bands that want to sound like the sonics or the mummies, and stupid new "hardcore" , you know, those guys that have dance moves and throw kicks and go to gym,, also the "artsypunk" or "weirdpunk"…those colecionist-geeky-bastards that think they know everything.

BUTT O BOOBS?
TOTALLY BUTT!!!

BUTT O EYES?
TOTTALY BUTT!!

BUTT O TACOS?
ITA DEPENDS HOW HUNGRY I AM!!!, BUT YOU CAN FEED ME ANYTIME!!

BUTT O OASIS?

BUTT O MELISSA?
MELISSA IS MY DRUG NOW!!!,,,,, i cannt hanldle it,, you know!!, its like someone who always be here, and is so cute, and comprehensive and RAD..but i dont know why i have written 666 on my hands!!!..im drunkk!! too drunk

San Diego sound

Seriously, San Diego is so weird to me. I grew up in Pennsylvania where we swim in polluted rivers and shoot groundhogs for fun. In San Diego the kids grow up smoking meth and surfing epic waves bra. I always have had the notion that Californians are cooler than the rest of the world. Not always the case, but I would put my money on it. Right now, that city needs to be examined. San Diego contains a couple of my favorite bands and it's not just because of my 'special relations' with 'certain unmentionables'. I am taking this opportunity to collect my thoughts on the manner and highlight some of the happenings that is San Diego. The thought just dawned on me as I could turn this into a Brian Eno moment... No New York, Yes LA, Maybe Chicago ... what about I dunno San Diego?! Ughhh - to be continued

Radio New Zealand on Flying Nun

Whoa - gold mine.

While digging for credentials on the heated Snapper video debate (flying nun vs. Chicano rap) I stumbled on the Radio New Zealand complete podcast on the (down-right magical) Flying Nun label. It will rule your ass. Flying Nun contained the majority of the Dudein Sound - this most pleasurable amazing music from a 'lil region from 'lil New Zealand during the 'lil 80s. Just a bunch of enthusiastic, strong-minded kids with an uncomprimising love of exploring melodies and trembly guitar reverb. But this traditional FN sound is only half of it. With newer technology came experimentation on sound and sampling. However with limited funds FN struggled the classic indie struggle. Rightly so, Flying Nun has my respect and attention as they've released an incredible compass of idiosyncratic sound. I mean, okok, there is also that good 'ol justified fasination that New Zealand is that island that people often mistake for Australia.

"You have to appreciate the pre-globalisation technological environment that existed back then (at least for us). A record released in the UK may have taken up to two years before a copy of the master was shipped out here and the pressing plant in Wellington produced the record. Case in point, Ian Curtis was dead and buried before any JD records were released here. They were awaited with great anticipation because people had read about the band in NME or whatever, but the actual records took an age to filter through." -- Graeme Downes

So listen up to this podcast. There 6 parts, each around 50 mintutes long. So I guess listen as you take a walk, drive in your car(?), surf the web bro, make some sweet love to your ho... I dunno. Also my super best bro bud for internet life friend, Mario wrote a post on the Verlaines that you should read - do the right thing and watch their bunny video.

Flying Nun Records Part One (duration: 51′33″)
As the nineteen seventies gave way to the eighties, NZ society underwent a sea change. In the post-punk/springbok tour era, it took a bright idea, $50, and a lot of good will to start Flying Nun Records...

Flying Nun Records Part Two (duration: 50′15″)
...Flying Nun runs pretty much as a co-operative, with the bands who have sales success leaving money in the company to fund other recordings. As more bands are taken on by Flying Nun, the possibilities - and necessities - of financial survival become more apparent. Mortality bites. Bands from a wider geographical area are taken on, and the sound continues to diversify...

Flying Nun Records Part Three (duration: 50′13″)
...Flying Nun moves from independent ownership to major-label association, and the first artist contracts are signed!...

Flying Nun Records Part Four (duration: 51′04″)
As Flying Nun's cult reputation spreads internationally, more bands tour and record in the Northern hemisphere. Founder Roger Shepherd moves to London to lead the charge… in the hope that a Flying Nun band will have a hit.

Flying Nun Records Part Five (duration: 51′05″)
...Flying Nun founder Roger Shepherd leaves the company. It's a time of rebuilding, many of the long-time acts have called it a day, and popular music and the music business have changed almost beyond recognition. Association with an ever-expanding international music company impacts on Flying Nun, but as the label celebrates it's 21st year, international success again looks possible for some Flying Nun acts.

Flying Nun Records - The Pub Quiz (duration: 43′16″)
In May 2004 A gaggle of celebrities, music hacks and train spotters gathered in front of a live and lubricated audience to test their knowledge in the specialist topic: artists and songs associated with New Zealand's premier independent record label, Flying Nun.

With over twenty-two years worth of questions, you can beat the buzzer at home if you know the name of the Straitjacket Fits second album, which band that celebrity keyboard player really belongs to, or the title of the first ever Flying Nun DVD. A New Zealand Music Month event exclusive to National Radio.

Confessor

Woah, this is killing me right now. Bright green shorts, doom metal and hair whipping in the wind on a stage overlooking a wave pool ... God, 1988 ruled. Confessor was invited to play at some battle of the bands in Houston at a god damn WATERPARK. Having just released a demo cassette, Uncontrolled, this video is evidence of their early combination of almighty high wailing vocals over a progtechnical metal doom sound.

As with every other band, they recently regrouped this year and put out an album that isn't as good. However, currently on their site you can buy some Confessor soap. Yes, soap... they are selling 'spice' for dudes and 'lavender' for the ladies. How metal is that???!!! Actually if you just buy their shirt and take a picture of you with it on - you can enter a contest to just win the soap instead. Seriously, I suggest you scroll through this gallery of winner pictures ... metal fans always get better with age. Like, "fuck you male pattern baldness - I'll put a bandana over you so no one will know. and fuck you wrinkles, this eye liner makes me more fuckable than ever. and fucking fuck you gut cause I've got a layer of steel riding under you emphasized with this metal screened thermal long sleeve tucked into some tight-assed appropriately stone washed jeans with that nice 'worn' look." Woooof.

BANKSY ... ughhh

As per modus operandi, Banksy opened "Village Pet Store And Charcoal Grill" in NYC this week. I love him but out of jealousy I hate him at the same time. Like my friend Klint says, "Men do what they want, bitches do what they can". Read more about Banksy's here.

While New Yorkers have been consumed by the stock market meltdown, a tiny little pet store quietly opened four days ago at 89 7th Avenue between West 4th and Bleeker Street in the West Village of New York City.

Surreal experimental that must be witnessed to realize the warping of your mental state.

Hexlove
The drummer from Sacramento's Who's You're Favorite Son, God? and Prints launches forth in his solo drum n' ambient experimental crusade against lameosity and the expected.

IX-Volume 2 // New Podcast on Saigon Market

SAIGONMARKET.COM--MELISSAMISERABLE.COMBLE

With the grand success of my first podcast (IX-V Vol.1), I've been invited back on Saigon Market to create another fabulous download. So here it is... ¡vIvA lA mExIco! Also -- when listening pay attention to the beginning 'cause I'm totally speaking Spanish. And I'm damn proud since I failed Spanish, twice.

Here is the yousendit.com link. I'll provide you with a permanent Saigon Market link later. Annnnnnd you may as well go to Saigon Market now to check it out all the other music and art nonsense.

Suicide Girls

Remember when Suicide Girls were cool? Remember when I wanted to be one? Remember makeoutclub.com and the pirate's cove? No????? Well, good because you're better off for it and you probably didn't know me back then. Right now I'm looking at the Suicide Girl's myspace page and it's dumb. All the girls are ugly with uglier tattoos. I used to be all about this shit back in the day when I listened to 25 ta life in ken's lowered civic (which was stolen 3 times). Driving around was the cooooooolest while we listened to the cooooooooolest music. For example... When we were sad we'd listen to dashboard confessional songs. When we were happy we would scream dashboard confessional songs. When we were mad we would listen to shelter. I was 18, ollied over curbs and took nude photos for my asian boyfriend.

Seriously look how rediculous these girls look -- Woof. I've got that hate-em-ay!

The Monks

Not unlike Los Saicos, The Monks derived out of a free-form existence during the mid-sixties. 5 American GIs stationed in Germany pretty much just doing their own weird-ass shit during a weird-ass time in a weird-ass place. As for me, I have no concept of the 60s. I pretty much only think of hippies and one of my mom's favorite movie, American Graffiti. Regardless, The Monks and Los Saicos both had a certain provocative sensibility that didn't fit. The Monks were less aggressive but just as unpolished and alternative. They approached chuck-berry's underbelly with a sort of repeditive tribal unmelody and innovative yet primitive feedback experimentation. Also conceptually they manufactured an identity relevant to an anti-Beatle: dressed in all black, sported shaved 'monk' hair, and wore rope around their necks. I can't help but think... were they just some weird eggheads or ingenious avant-garde intelligenstias??? Whatever, I dunno. The Monks are incredibly influential as the pre-emptive garage rock to protopunk to krautrock band that they are. And they will forever hold their place in my heart and on Wiki's pre-punk group list.

"It probably took us a year to get the sound right. We experimented all the time. A lot of the experiments were total failures and some of the songs we worked on were terrible. But the ones we kept felt like they had something special to them. And they became more defined over time." Lead-vocalist, Gary Burger
